Newport Folk Festival

Lagunitas Community Giving + Newport Festival Foundation

NFF & Lagunitas Co-Grant to Turnaround Arts

Since 2014 Lagunitas Brewing Company is honored to be partners with Newport Folk Festival. In awe of their rich musical history since 1959, from Mississippi John Hurt (1963) to Bob Dylan going electric (1965) to Lucius’ countless stage appearances with more artists than anyone in Newport history, we have watched this festival educate and help change generations.

Beginning our partnership by fueling the festival with beer, our relationship has always been rooted in the appreciation of music.  Many of the recent artists that have graced the stage at Newport have also performed at the Lagunitas Laguminiamphitheaterette in Petaluma, CA.

As with all great relationships, growth blossoms organically and takes on a natural progression.  The fact is, we ended up having more in common than we initially knew. Like Lagunitas, Newport Folk Festival has deep roots in supporting causes including music education initiatives.  Lagunitas Community Giving began 24 years ago and has helped shape who we are as a company. The early stories of kegs “falling off the tailgate” of our founder’s truck into the hands of local non-profits are true.  “Beer rich and cash poor” is how we happily lived in those early years.  We’ve been turning beer into money for non-profits ever since, donating to charities across the country through our Donations and  Grant Program.

This year, aside from supporting the Newport late night shows and using that money to support music education, Lagunitas and the Newport Festivals Foundation teamed up to provide a co-grant to Turnaround Arts, a national program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.  Funds this year were used to purchase ukuleles for students at Roger Williams Middle School in Providence, RI. Those students were lucky enough to study and rehearse with the one and only Valerie June and performed together at Newport Folk Festival to a truly awe-struck audience.

We look forward to many years of celebrating great causes with our friends at Newport Folk Festival, tying together music and community. It’s good to have friends.
